Nigeria’s Diezani Alison-Madueke has been elected the new President
of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) at the oil
cartel’s ongoing 166th General Meeting in Vienna, Austria.
The Petroleum Minister succeeds Libyan Vice-Prime Minister for Corporations, Abdourhman Atahar Al-Ahirish. Until her latest election, she was OPEC’s alternate President. She is the first female to be elected OPEC’s President.
Alison-Madueke’s first task will be to steady the free fall of crashing global oil prices.
